The 10 Commandments Series: Blasphemy

The 10 Commandments Series: Blasphemy

Read: Exodus 20:7

Unforgivable sin, are there any? The answer is yes. Some people say that "Some sins are not counted." But for God, sin is a sin even if you steal a pen from your office or if you murder someone, hypothetically. But there are very few sins that are worse than any other sin and cannot be forgiven. One of them is using God's name in vain or Blasphemy.

Blasphemy is the only one of the 10 commandments which states that God will not forgive a person who violates this commandment, i.e., Thou shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain.

Jesus particularly mentioned it in Matthew 12:31-32"And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but the blasphemy against the Spirit cannot be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

According to the Trinity, The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are the same, so if we disrespect One, we disrespect all.

This sin is much worse even above disobeying parents, stealing, committing adultery, etc. We sin when we add God with a negative statement.

During the time of era of BC, the jews took Blasphemy so seriously that they didn't take the name of God at all. If they are reading scripture when the name of God came paused for some time and then moved forward. The pause while reading indicated that it was the name of God there. But we don't have to be like that, we have accepted God not as the supreme authority and as a person we should be afraid of but rather as a Father, our Savior, and Guide.

If an atheist commits evil, it does not bring God into disrespect. But if a believer commits evil using God's name, she/he is not only committing evil but bringing terrible damage to the name and image of God. Why you may ask because we are made and created in His Image and when we become believers we are representing the Kingdom in some way or the other. We Become the Ambassador of Christ and His Kingdom.

That is why using God's name in vain or blasphemy is one of the unforgivable sins. Try not to do the sin and do not. Amen & God bless you!
