The 10 Commandments Series: Introduction

The 10 Commandments Series: Introduction

Read : Exodus 31:18 ; 32:19 ; 34.

From today we are going to start the 10 commandments series. These commandments were given to Israelites by God through Moses. Moses is the most important prophet in Judaism.

The 10 commandments were the first ten laws given by God to Israelites. In the books from Exodus till Deuteronomy, totally there are around 600+ laws in the Torah (First five books). But every time God gave them these laws, the Israelites disobeyed even more. Before Jesus came into this world, many prophets had warned people to repent; some repented and some didn't. But Our God in heaven is merciful and loves all, so He sent his only son to die for us who are sinners.

After the Israelites had crossed the red sea, the Israelites had settled down at the foot of Mount Sinai, Moses had gone up and saw the Hand Of God and the two stone tablets.

When God was writing the 10 commandments, down at the foot of the mountain, people were tired of waiting for Moses so they started complaining to Aaron (Moses' Brother). Aaron told the people to melt all the gold they have and make it into a golden calf. And they replaced the true God with just a golden calf and by doing so they broke the first two commandments. God knew what was happening down the mountain, He got angry. Moses asked God to forgive them and God did forgive. When Moses came down he saw the people worshipping the golden calf, he became furious and threw the stone tablets to the ground. Moses later talked to the people to worship the True God who brought them out of slavery and not some golden calf.

We can learn two things from this story, (1) No matter what we must be firm in our faith in God and not get carried away by the world. The adversary might try to trick you but be firm. (2) Understand that your Father in Heaven is merciful and will forgive you and help you no matter what. Don't take advantage of it but be thankful to Him.

Since Moses broke the tablets (real), there must be some written laws to remember. Hence, Moses rewrote the laws in new tablets, which were preserved in the "Ark of Covenant".

These laws are not only for Judaism but even for us. Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to complete it (Matthew 5:17). These laws lay a foundation for being a God-fearing person. I hope you all will spend time reading the 10 commandments, obey these laws and be blessed. Amen & God Bless You!!
