The 10 Commandments Series: Your Neighbors

The 10 Commandments Series: Your Neighbors

Read: Exodus 20:16-17

Today we are going to read about our last two commandments. Which are about How we should live with the people in this world”

The first one is "Do not bear false witness against your neighbour". This commandment usually can be seen in legal courts. If we are in a court and we are the witness and we are supposed to say the truth what had really happened, but usually people will say the truth but some people do not say the truth but instead they lie. The reason may be bribing, blackmailing etc., but in daily life, no one is bribing or blackmailing us, but then why do we lie?? Might be because of one’s weakness or benefit. Sometimes due to personal weakness is ok, but if we lie for worldly benefits it’s a sin. The reason is with an example, there are two brothers one is Sam (6 years) and the other one is Peter (4 years). Their mother keeps a bowl of cookie and instructs them not to eat the cookies. Peter continuous playing, but the cookies are tempting Sam. So, Sam eats all of them (he is breaking the 5th commandment). So when his mother comes and asks who ate the cookies Sam says it is his brother Peter. The mother believes him and scolded Peter. Even though Sam is just 6 it is not appreciable. It is a sin. If you just say the truth and you are punished. Do not worry, for your just one truth will lead to a good life for you.

Now let’s move on to our last commandment which is "Do Not Covet". The meaning of 'Covet' is Desires. For example, imagine there are two small kids. One of them is having a two or three-layer ice-cream and the other kid is having small ice candy and the kid with small ice candy will have the DESIRE to have the ice cream with many layers. The same DESIRE may encourage him to steal. Coveting often leads to stealing which is against the 8th commandment. Example, 2 businessmen Michel earning $1,000,000 and John earning only $500,000. John is jealous and desires to get more salary than Michel. So John steals the money of Michel, due to which Michel becomes poor, but John becomes rich, but John must be answerable to god on the great judgment day. We must remember that one thing God has blessed each and every human irrespective of the caste, religion, wealth etc. Just we need to be patient and wait for the right time and to be ready to receive it.

I hope you all had a good time during these 6 days learning about the 10 Commandments AMEN.
