The Sermon On The Mount Series: Beatitudes

The Sermon On The Mount Series: Beatitudes

Jesus’ sermon on the mount began with what is now known as the Beatitudes. The word beatitude means to be blessed or prosperous. The 10 commandments given by Moses are completely different from the Beatitudes, instead of giving a list of Don'ts (what not to do), Jesus gives us a list of Do's (what we have to become).

He uses phrases like, “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:7-9). These speak to who the person is, and not just a list of dos and don’ts. For example, how does one become merciful? Is this a one-time event that you can check off once completed? The answer is no, and that is perhaps one reason why the teachings of Jesus within the Sermon on the Mount are so unusual.

What is being blessed actually mean?
According to the Romans, being blessed is by getting powerful or rich or prosperous and according to the Jewish Pharisees, becoming blessed is by the strict obedience of the laws. But according to Jesus being blessed is by becoming meek, lowly, hungering for rightness, merciful and a peacemaker. In short, being blessed is not by our works but it is by who we are or whom we become.

How do we become blessed/happy?
Living the beatitudes is same as living like Jesus. And how is that?:-

1. Know that we need God and we need each other. (Matt 5:3)
2. When one of us suffers, we must mourn with them and support them. (Matt 5:4)
3. By becoming humble than having pride in oneself. (Matt 5:5)
4. Wanting to know more about God and getting closer to him. (Matt 5:6)
5. Forgiving others no matter what they have done to us than having grudge against them. (Matt 5:7)
6. Being clean/holy/pure so that the Holy Spirit may dwell in our hearts. (Matt 5:8)
7. Choosing peace over violence/fighting. (Matt 5:9)
8. We must stand for what is right or what we believe even though it means that we have to suffer (Matt 5:10)

Living the Beatitudes is like living the life of Jesus and when we do so, we get the true feeling of being blessed or happy for which our heart was made for. AMEN.
